Laughter, enjoyment, and fun are a few simple things in life that everybody wants to experience whenever possible. As young people, we can find that laughter or fun around almost any corner. For seniors, however, it is not that simple. Elders throughout the world are filled with knowledge and experience but that knowledge and experience cannot be spread unless we interact with them. For that reason, Coupla Guys and Gals partnered with Remington Independent Living Facilities in Irving, TX.
Everybody deserves respect, opportunity, and enjoyment in their lives, including seniors, and that is really what this event was about. On Tuesday April 12, 2016, guys and gals from the DFW Metroplex made their way to Irving to bring some fun and joy into the lives of seniors. I have never seen so many people light up and get so much joy out of something so simple. Conversation, music, and dancing were everywhere and the seniors of Remington loved every second of it! There was even a hat contest. Some of the seniors made a silly hat to flaunt for the evening and boy, they did not disappoint! First prize went to Betty (#6), second prize went to Wanda (#2), third prize went to Joy and Jerry for their matching couple hats (#4), and fourth prize went to Alice (#3).
Life is short and needs to be sweet. The purpose of this event is to bring out influencers to connect to a cause. By getting involved and spreading the word about things like this, you can help bring awareness to things that are usually overlooked. Coming out and seeing how many people do get involved just shows that there are still passionate and kind people in this world, and that is exactly what we need. Going to a senior living facility for a couple hours just to engage in conversation with some of the residents will make their day. They don’t have the luxuries that we have as young adults so anything that will put a smile on their face is a wonderful thing. A couple, Jim and Brosh, have been married for 71 years. Jim’s face absolutely lit up when he got to share that with all of us. 71 years of marriage! Our generation has some work to do if we want to be that power couple when we are older!
I would like to say thank you to Coupla Guys and Gals for doing such an amazing job with this event and thank you for all that you do with other events and outreach. What you do is amazing and there needs to be more of it. The more people that get involved, the better! Thank you to Remington Independent Living Facilities for partnering with Coupla Guys and Gals, and a huge thank you to the director, Diego Barrantes. Without your help, events like this wouldn’t be possible.
Please go check out http://www.couplaguysandgals.com to learn more about the work they do and events that are put on. By 2017, the outreach will be spread to 12 cities and there will be over 400 events nationwide. As Wanda said while dancing, “It’s time to party!” And party we shall!
