FRISCO, TEXAS (MAY 30, 2013) – The Frisco RoughRiders split their double header with the Springfield Cardinals Thursday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark. The ‘Riders shut out the Cardinals 1-0 in game one, but were blanked in game two as Springfield won 6-0. Frisco won the series 2-1.
After three scoreless innings in game one, Brett Nicholas slammed a solo home run to lead off the fourth. The RoughRiders (31-21) remained in control, and despite loading the bases in the ninth, they held on for the win, shutting Springfield out 1-0. The win extended Frisco’s winning streak to a season-high seven games.
Phil Klein (2-0) earned the victory, relieving Tyler Tufts in the fourth and pitching two hitless innings with four strikeouts. Seth Blair (2-5) pitched 5.2 innings, allowing one run on seven hits to suffer the loss. Richard Bleier came on in relief in the ninth with bases loaded to earn the save.
Neil Ramirez struggled in the second game as the Cardinals (25-26) took an early lead. In the first inning, Ruben Gotay knocked an RBI double to right scoring Tommy Phamfrom first. Jake Lemmerman then brought home two more as the Cardinals (25-26) took a 3-0 lead.
Springfield added to their lead, though their three-runs in the first were enough. Xavier Scruggs fired a two-run blast over the left field fence in the third and Luis Mateo led off the fourth with a homer, extending the Cardinals lead 6-0, which became the final score.
Nick Greenwood (1-2) pitched five scoreless innings to earn the win while Ramirez (5-2) struggled in his four innings, giving up six runs on five hits and striking out seven, to suffer the loss.
The RoughRiders begin a new series with the Tulsa Drillers at Dr Pepper Ballpark Friday at 7:05 p.m. Rangers rehabber Alexi Ogando (–, –) makes the start for the ‘Riders. The starter for Tulsa has yet to be announced.
