So how’s that new Sour Patch Kids Slurpee at 7-Eleven?

On July 1, 7-Eleven started selling their new Slurpee flavor: Sour Patch Watermelon. I don’ t know if the name implies the Sour Patch Kids all became watermelons when they grew up or what, but in any case, Sour Patch Watermelon is now something that exists both as a candy and as a frozen drink.

So how is it in Slurpee form? To put it simply, it’s OK.

DSC_0112To me, the Sour Patch Watermelon Slurpee tastes more like liquefied, frozen Nerds candy than it does Sour Patch Kids. That’s not a bad flavor on paper — I quite like Nerds, as a matter of fact — but it’s a weird flavor to drink. Especially when it’s cold and somewhat crunchy (again, more like Nerds than Sour Patch Kids) due to the ice.

Every time I would reach for the Slurpee cup to quench my thirst there was a brief, sour moment of, “Oh God, why?” when the flavor first hit my tongue. That morphed quickly into, “OK, this is fine. In fact I kind of like it.” But when needing something to wash down food it wouldn’t be my first choice.

So the Sour Patch Watermelon Slurpee is not a beverage I would pair with a meal. Go ahead and have a soda or water or whatever with your hot dogs this weekend. Save the Slurpee for dessert, or better yet, get some of 7-Eleven’s ice cream instead.
